Hey! This debate topic was recommended by Steph! Here it is.
A little while ago, a hot debate topic was whether to keep "Under God" in The Pledge Of Allegiance, which is stated by children at public schools regularly every morning. Do you think that "Under God" should be kept in The Pledge? Should it be printed on our money? Are we religiously discriminating towards people who don't in fact believe in God? Are we setting the stereotype that everyone in America believes that we are "Under God"? Or do we as a people have a right to present that The United States trusts in God, and is that behavior acceptable? Does being politically correct get in the way of freedom of speech on this matter?
There you go!

I believe that the statement "under God" is a representation of what our country once was. Our country was formed under the belief that God was our lord and we lived to serve him. If not for God, America would not be what it is today. The religion helped us to shape our beliefs, and even though not everyone believes in God. The alligence is not demading that everyone be catholic, but only that everyone should agree that America was formed under God. The pledge is not asking anyone to conform to our religion.
I think it should stay the way it is....Do you?
Peppah, I agree that it represents what this country WAS. We should still reconize what this country was, but this nation is no longer run under god. We should recall that time when it was in history lessons. Saying this is a nation under god is a false statement.
I agree with Peppah Shakah. Who exactly does it hurt? We formed our nation Under God. Religion was a huge part of the government then. Now, people get offended by EVERYTHING and sue EVERYONE. It's absolutely ridiculous. It's America's traidition to say Under God during the Pledge of Allegiance. Do we really want to change something so traditional and important in America just because some people don't believe in God? We are not forced to say "Under God" anyway. I know many people who either stand and don't recite the Pledge, or say the Pledge, but don't say the Under God part. Both of these are fine. For the rest of us that believe in God, it is nice to incorporate him in our pledge, reminding us of the religious beginning to America -- which is our history.
Well Roni, I appreciate your opinion but i need to agree with Alexa. The pledge of Allegiance is optional, no on is forced to say it. It is avaliable for those who believe and for those who don't they can withdraw. I don't think that this issue is big enough to change our entire pledge. it is a tradition that shouldn't be changed, we wouldn't change our government because people dissagreed with it would we? Why the pledge then? Thank you for also agreeing with me Alexa. :)
I personly don't really care if they change the pledge or not. I want to move to Ireland anyway. But, if we could make it so those kids wouldn't have to sit out, then why wouldn't we? We shouldn't have to keep everything the same because it is tradition. Times change. And the pledge does not state this country was founded under god, it says that it is still under god. Which is not true. I don't think it is deeply offending anyone. I just think it might dissapoint someone.
Personally, i think the whole founding of the country is a bit hypocritical. Pilgrims left england because they seeked religious freedom, yet
when they got here they forced their religion upon others. Anyway, I personally don't think the government SHOULD have to do with religion at all (we had a previous debate about it, i believe).
Anyway, regardless of that, i think it would be too much of a bother to change the pledge of allegiance. Personally, when i say it (i warn you, this will come out sounding quite unpatriotic) i dont really think about what im saying. I just sort of...say it.
Alexa is right in saying that people just get too offended nowadays. Really, the pledge is a silly little chant thats a million years old. I doubt i'm the only person in the country who thinks little of it. Changing it would cause mass confusion and a giant uproar (which in itself would be ridiculous.) If it somehow insults you, then feel free not to say it.
Its kind of like the people who try to ban books from the school just because they dont want their child to read it. Theres nothing wrong with keeping your child from reading a certain book, but its not okay to keep everyone else from reading it. If you dont like to say the pledge of allegiance, then fine. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But changing it is really pointless.
Yah, I guess you are right Strudel. It would cause an uproar, and we have more important things to worry about. We don't even say the pledge at are school. I agree with the whole "so much for looking for freedom of religion" thing. I really don't care about the pledge. It is just a dumb chant.
Strudel, you completely took the words out of my mouth!! i completely agree. Why bother changing it now?? It is just a chant. Why do some people take it so personally??
This is not exactly the site I was looking for. Oh well! This works! Are all of you American?
Are you American, Ellen?
I am not sure I should be telling you that. My first name and the country I live in is plenty of stalker material :)
Because it really narrows it down if we know there's an Ellen in America...
Most definatly! :) No, I am not American.
thats really cool ellen! what country are you from?
I am from England.
I think the pledge of Alligence is fine how it is. For those who pray to God it is appropriate and for those who don't, don't say it. Everyone gets to keep their options and be happy.
wow, i guess this is an international website now! I can't believe it's gotten to this!
