Monday- Sin

Hey! I've got a big project due in the morning so I have to make this quick but this debate topic was submitted by Steph a while ago. Here it is...

Is breaking the law a sin? What is a sin? Who sins? What happens to you if you do sin? Should people depend on God to forgive their sins?

I think "breaking the law" is a bit vague. Obviously, murdering is a sin, and grand scale theft is too. But then you get into things like speeding tickets....And I was watching law and order again last night (by the way, the verdict for that situation I was talking about was guilty, in case you all were wondering)
ANYWAY. On law and order, there was this guy who worked at a lab where they experimented with things like ebola and anthrax and stuff. So he sold this other guy anthrax illegally, and the guy got really sick and so did the young girl that he kidnapped. The government stepped in and told the police and the newspapers that they had to keep everything hush hush, even though the anthrax was still out there and people in the city could potentially get very hurt.

Anyway, one guy from the news DID report the story, (and they eventually did find the anthrax and lock it up) but they put the journalist in jail just for warning the city about the anthrax. he "broke" the law. but did he sin?

I don't think that he sinned, he was only doing what he thought was right.
I also don't think that people should look to god for forgiveness for a couple of reasons. One, according to the Bible if you sin you are sent to hell, so I honestly don't think it can really be that forgiving. The other and more important reason for not looking to god for forgiveness, is because you need to first forgive yourself before you can ask for forgiveness.

I agree with what Kartik said about needing to forgive yourself before you can ask for forgiveness. I think that the most important thing about forgiveness is that you mean what you say. I've been taught, and have always believed, that all sins can be forgiven by God. The one catch is that one must truly mean it, and honestly feel sorry about it. If you ask for forgiveness for every sin that you've ever had in your life before you die (and really feel bad about it all) then you will go to Heaven.

Now what about people like Hitler? And mass terrorists? Well, these people never felt bad about their actions. SO, even if for some reason they asked God for forgiveness before they died, they wouldn't be granted forgiveness, because they couldn't have meant it. People don't do absolutely terrible things when they don't, in the deepest parts of their hearts, believe it to be the "right" thing to do.

I don't think that if you sin, you go straight to Hell. I believe that everyone sins. All the time. But - as Alexa mentioned - if you feel bad and pray to God for forgiveness and learn from your mistakes through life, you're good to go.
